Center for Energy Systems Research, Tennessee Tech University                               Cookeville, TN

Research Assistant – Bio Opto Nano Devices Laboratory 2007-2011

  • 4+ years  research in nanoparticle doped Magneto-optic (MO) glass and polymers for application in optical current sensors.
  • Designed specific optical test setups for characterizing MO sensors and recording data using LabVIEW based data acquisition.
  • Achieved enhanced magneto-optic sensitivities of the order of 60 times compared to plain glasses.
  • Published research findings in journals and conferences.
  • Analyzed the material properties and morphologies for magnetic nanoparticle doped polymers using optical test setups, X-Ray diffractometry, Small Angle X-Ray scattering and SEM.
  • Dissertation on magneto-optics of electric field oriented nanoparticles in a polymer nanocomposite.
  • Studied the performance of quantum dot solar cells and evaluated theoretical efficiencies for Silicon, Gallium Arsenide and Cadmium Selenide quantum dot solar cells.

Teaching Assistant/Instructor 2007-2010

  • Trained and supervised undergraduate students in the operation of electrical engineering laboratory instruments.

PROJECTS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Designed a solar powered docking station based on fuel cells for hybrid electric vehicles.
  • Designed a user interactive process control system using the Dragon12 -HCS12 microcontroller development board.
  • Analyzed various optical networks using a portable Optical Time Domain Reflectometer.
  • Evaluated Optical Network Routing Schemes using Matlab algorithms.
  • Assembled a solar cell characterization unit and tested the IV characteristics of solar cells.
  • Designed a dedicated setup to apply very high electric fields to align nanoparticles doped into polymers and liquids.
  • Tested and characterized glasses and polymers for magneto-optic sensitivities and classified their usage in optical current sensors (Master’s Thesis).
  • Designed an image acquisition and manipulation system using an Altera FPGA.
  • Designed a microcontroller based articulation mechanism for a grenade launcher (Senior design project).
