Dynamic Tether Modeling for E-Sail Prototype Development

The Electric Sail (E-Sail) is a relatively new concept in advanced space propulsion. This technology has the potential to provide propellant-less propulsion which relies on the interaction between an array of deployed wires and solar winds. The TTU team has adapted the TTU Tether Simulation model to the E-Sail concept in cooperation with Marshall Space Flight Center. This tether model has characterized the behavior of a variety of deployment scenarios for the E-Sail system. The dynamic model has received preliminary validation through comparisons with analytical models and empirical data derived from simple in-lab models.
