I was reading Science In Cinema when I began to think about what topics I would discuss about a piece of science fiction (SF)
1. The time during which the piece was filmed or written
- What social concerns are relevant (examples: the Cold War)
- What technology was available
- What breakthroughs were happening in STEM fields
2. What is the fiction in the SF
- What wasn’t possible when the work was made
- What isn’t possible now
- Where does this rank on the “Impossibility Scale” (refer to Physics of the Impossible)
3. What is the fact in the SF
- What was possible when the work was made
- What is possible now
- How accurate is it shown
- How does it relate to the plot
4. What is the main theme
- What is the main concern of the work
- What are major themes shown
- How does science relate to these themes
5. Ethics addressed
- What would our society think about the implications of science in the work
- What would the reader or viewer do in the same situation and what is their view on it
